Leigh Everett James Clay was born in Red Deer, Alberta, on March 14,1954, and lived on a farm in rural Alberta before moving to Vernon, British Columbia, with his mother and two younger brothers.He attended Art School in Nelson, British Columbia, and later went to Olds College in Alberta, where he obtained his Horticultural Technologist Diploma in 1990.He was a landscape gardener at the Calgary Zoo for several years and later worked for Sunnyside Greenhouses until his retirement in 2000.
