During the latter half the 20th century, the Tennessee Historical Commission and the nonprofit Tipton-Haynes Historical Association, Inc., worked to establish and preserve the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site. Collected photographs of these efforts and achievements have been hidden away in the site's archives for decades to only now be viewed by the public.

Since 1965, the Tipton-Haynes Historical Association, Inc., has carried out the monumental task of interpreting and preserving one of the state of Tennessee's most historic sites. The association's Mary Hardin McCown Archives safeguards historical documentation and photographs of the Tipton and Haynes families and other related information pertaining to the site. On behalf of the association, author Wes Spurgeon selected images from the archives to bring to life the abundant history of the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site.
