Heartbroken by reports of Alice's infidelity, and as a way to escape from a rapidly re-darkening Europe over which the clouds of a new war are already gathering, Frank emigrates in search of a new life in a new land. In Canada Frank meets Loretta whose experience of a war-time marriage has been as unhappy as his own. Success, promotion and a promising future in public relations look certain but, when Loretta is murdered by her estranged husband, Frank realises that his new life has been just a desperate attempt to obliterate the past. Losing Loretta determines him to recapture Alice and their dream.
