He was the youngest Brigadier in the British Army at that time. He worked in Europe following the German surrender and was amongst those responsible for the Betrayal of the Cossacks. He was appointed to the Distinguished Service Order, made a Commander of the Legion of Merit (USA) and awarded the Croix de Guerre.
