Among his achievements as a player were captaincy of the New Zealand All Blacks, the Crusaders Super 12 team, and the Canterbury provincial team. He also played 9 games for nelson bays in 1990. He then continued to play professionally, in Scotland as the captain of the Edinburgh Gunners. First played for Woodend, near Rangiora which kicked off his Rugby Union career. He also played 7''s for New Zealand in the innaugrial world cup held at Murryfield.
