Ritchie was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round (12th overall) of the 1990 Major League Baseball Draft and made his major league debut on April 3, 1997. He pitched in 57 games for the Twins in 1997 and 1998. On October 3, 1998, the Twins released him, and he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on December 22. Ritchie was used as a starting pitcher by the Pirates and in 1999, he won a career-high 15 games. He was their Opening Day starter in 2001, but after the season, on December 13, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox along with Lee Evans for Kip Wells, Sean Lowe, and Josh Fogg.
