The design was limited by its 7.62 x 38mm Nagant chambering which was necessary to utilize large stockpiles of the cartridge and provide commonality with the then standard sidearm of the Red Army, the Nagant revolver. Trials of the Model 1927 revealed poor reliability mainly because the over length cases caused repeated chamber jams and double feeds. As a result it was not adopted for general issue. The model 1927's failures lead to a decision by the Red Army to replace the Nagant revolver with a more modern auto pistol that used a true automatic pistol cartridge, the TT-33 pistol, which Tokarev would later design.
