Darien Dalton has a secret. For years she has bound that secret to the dark hours of night, where a menacing world of smoke and fire burst forth in her dreams to spew their terror. By day that world recedes and she's a senior associate at a prestigious law firm, who has constructed a life that is rule-bound and lonely, but above all, safe. Until now. Chance Deckert is an Origin and Cause fire expert from Montana, who has learned from painful experience that the only kind of love he is capable of has no roots and blows as free as the tumbleweed on the family ranch. He takes his pleasure where and when he finds it, and then he moves on. Brought together on Block Island to investigate suspicious fires, Darien and Chance forge an uneasy relationship that can burn as hot as the fires they're investigating and then plunge into a deep freeze. Darien's fire world threatens to break through from her dreams and shatter her grip on reality. Chance's cocky grin grows wobbly around the edges as he confronts feelings both new and unwelcome. And someone is willing to do whatever it takes to keep them from solving the mystery.
