Vital tooth bleaching is considered the most conservative treatment for discolored teeth and has been shown to be efficient when used with careful case selection, diagnosis and treatment planning. However, some clinicians express concern about the effect of these agents on dental restorative materials present in the esthetic zone, which may necessitate further refurbishment or even replacement. These concerns include the influence of various bleaching agents on the physical properties, surface topography, marginal integrity of different restorative materials. Recently, there are variable compositions of composite resin in the market, with different components of organic matrices, filler types and variable filler loading such as nano-fills and nano-composites, which are commonly used in the clinical practice. Little information is available about the bleaching effect on the new generations of composite resin restorative materials. Moreover, previous studies that indicated potential changes in the physical properties of composite resin restorations after bleaching, could not demonstrate the clinical relevance of these changes and recommended further clinical research.
