In Orthodontics, as stated by Dr. EARMAN D. RAUCH1 Torque is the force that enable the orthodontist to control the axial inclination of the teeth and to place them in the harmonizing positions that are so desirable for a nicely finished result. Torque is the force that gives the operator control over the movement of the roots of the teeth.Defined as a twisting force that tends to cause rotation, the term torque encompasses many important aspects of orthodontic treatment.Torque is often referred to as a measure of force causing an object to rotate about an axis within the object. It is a complex three-dimensional movement resulting from the forces of a couple around a fulcrum point and can be thought of as the moment that moves an object. In orthodontics, it is often thought of as root movement, as opposed to crown movement which is typically defined by tipping. In the literature, it is typically described in units of Newton millimeters (Nmm) as a direct result of the force magnitudes and minute measurements involved with objects as small as teeth. In orthodontics, the torque of teeth plays a critical role in both esthetics and occlusion.
