Maske is associate professor of art history at the University of Kentucky and author of many books, including Geisha: Beyond the Painted Smile and Potters and Patrons in Edo Period Japan: Takatori Ware and the Kuroda Domain. Patricia Fister is professor emeritus at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and director of research at the Center for the Study of Women, Buddhism, and Cultural History, both in Kyoto.
