My African ancestors were kidnapped and marched to the west coast, where they were put in shackles and put in a ship's hull. In a forced voyage from the African coast across the Atlantic, termed the Middle Passage, Africans were overpacked, lying down without enough room to turn into a ship's hull. So many died from famine, disease, and suicide (Britannica, 2020) that sharks regularly followed the slave ships.
