After a few years in the academic institution called the University of Zululand(UNIZULU), Dr PAN Nkosi-kaNdaba received a call from the former Vice-Chancellor to set up and manage the Change Management Project aka GIJIMA (IsiZulu word for run) Project. This was meant to assist the latter run with the transformation agenda of this institution so as to become a Comprehensive Institution (CI) in keeping with the dictates of the relevant legislations of the Republic of South Africa's Education Department. In executing this brief, it became necessary to randomly study Comprehensive Universities of such countries as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, Denmark and Singapore for comparative and selective borrowing without transplanting, but for adapting to UNIZULU's situation, the lessons learnt from these institutions proved to be worth writing home about. Though the comparative method was not fully adhered to, what was obtained from literature survey haspresently placed the institution under the incumbent, on the path to becoming a fully-fledged comprehensive institution in the near future. This book briefly shares some of these lessons for transforming institutions.
