BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH of JOANNE BORDEN Joanne Borden is a transgender woman who lives in Nassau County, New York. She is a widow, has 2 children, and has 4 grandchildren who call her "Papa Joanne." Before retiring, Joanne was a licensed Industrial Engineer and was president of two engineering societies. She holds an MBA degree from NYU, and is a World War II veteran. In retirement, Joanne has authored two other books: The Transgender Monologues: Gender, Sexuality, and LGBT Life (short stories and essays); and Identical Treatment in the Machine of the Law: The Quest For Transgender Equal Rights (information for advocates). She has performed in the Vagina Monologues and Fresh Fruit Festival Variety Shows (NYC), where she won the Best Story Teller of 2012 Award. She performs her own monologues and gives speeches on transgender and LGBTQ+ issues at the county, state, and national levels. Joanne received the Woman of Distinction Award in 2017 from the New York State Assembly, is a past Vice President of her League of Women Voters, and is an advocate for an end to sexism by promoting women's equality. She often speaks as an advocate for the human rights of gender variant people at the county, state, and national levels.
