Después de escapar de un campo de concentración nazi en Alemania en 1937, y luego de otro campo en Ruan, el narrador alemán sin nombre de veintisiete años de la obra maestra de Seghers termina en el polvoriento puerto marítimo de Marsella. En el camino, se le pide que entregue una carta a un hombre llamado Weidel en París y descubre que Weidel se suicidó, dejando una maleta que contiene cartas y el manuscrito de una novela.
