In my diploma thesis I have translated and analysed a theatre play "Butterflies are free" by Leonrad Gershe (1969). The play was originally translated into Czech by Ivo T. Havl in 1972. While comparing Havl 's translation to mine I have particularly focused on renovating the language means. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of a dramatic text and with the theory of translating a dramatic text. Within the dramatic text I have listed the essential components of any dramatic piece. Within translating a dramatic text I have explained the procedure of translating a drama and the differences between translating a dramatic piece and a novel. The practical part includes the translation of the first act of the play "Butterflies are free", analysis and comparison of Havl 's and my translation.
