Although linguists' opinions still differ on the subject, the central issue in the field of subtitling studies no longer is whether we should view subtitling as translation. The key question is what needs to be done to make subtitling work better or what should subtitlers do to make sure films get good translations. Peter Newmark said that "the central concern of translation theory is to determine an appropriate method of translation." High quality subtitling is achieved by conscious application of various translation strategies when subtitling.
