The book emerged from 18 different photographic safaris totaling more than a year in the bush in eastern and southern Africa. It is intended to help the reader understand what an African safari is like, become familiar with the incredible variety of wildlife, and share some of the adventures and encounters which have made those trips so enjoyable and exciting. The reader will be surrounded by a pride of roaring lions, paddle a canoe in the company of hippos and crocodiles, meet a flying snake, be charged by an elephant, hunt with cheetahs and lions, and search for some of Africa's rarest animals. Each chapter of the book condenses many encounters with either a single type of animal (lions or elephants). or a group of similar animals (small\er cats or hoofed animals). Many chapters will relate some of the important natural history, or current status, of the animal/s being discussed, but the theme which binds all of the chapters together is the stories of our encounters and interactions with the animal/s. Some of the encounters have been scary and some have been funny, but all of them illustrate the events which may occur on an African safari and the behaviors of the animals. Many of the descriptions are accompanied by original photographs which help to make the story more compelling.
