John Stuttard's experience of travel in the 50 years (1964 to 2014) was typical of many of his generation. Few countries and geographical areas were too dangerous or out of bounds. Travel was, relatively, much safer than it seems to be 50 years later when this book was written. The accounts of his foreign journeys provide a picture of the environment in which adventurous travel in the second half of the 20th Century could take place.

Autorenporträt
John Stuttard was greatly influenced by stories of one of his ancestor's travels as a missionary in the 19th Century. While at Cambridge, he travelled widely and then spent a year in Borneo in the mid '60's, teaching English with Voluntary Service Overseas at a secondary school in Brunei. After qualifying as a chartered accountant in London, he spent many weeks abroad. Business travel was complemented by holiday travel to some remote places and to geographical areas which are not easily accessible to the cautious traveller. As Lord Mayor of London in 2006-07 he visited 23 countries, spending more than 100 days abroad, promoting the City of London and the financial services industry. The details of this business travel are recorded in a separate book Whittington to World Financial Centre - The City of London and its Lord Mayor. After serving as Lord Mayor, he was knighted in January 2008 for Public Service.
