Autorenporträt
John Stuttard was born in Burnley in 1945. From the age of eight, he was sent away to boarding school, initially on the Wirral in Cheshire and then to Shrewsbury School, prior to graduating from Churchill College, Cambridge University. As a result, he was used to travelling and living away from home at an early age. He was greatly influenced by his great aunt's stories of her great uncle's travels as a missionary. While at Cambridge, he travelled widely and then spent a year in Borneo in the mid '60's, teaching English with Voluntary Service Overseas at a secondary school in Brunei. After qualifying as a chartered accountant in London, he spent many weeks on assignments in Europe (particularly Finland), the United States, Iran and South Africa. Business travel was complemented by holiday travel to some remote places and to geographical areas which are not easily accessible to the cautious traveller. As Lord Mayor of London in 2006-07 he visited 23 countries, spending more than 100 days abroad, promoting the City of London and the financial services industry. The details of this business travel are recorded in a separate book Whittington to World Financial Centre - The City of London and its Lord Mayor. After serving as Lord Mayor, he was knighted in January 2008 for Public Service.
