Autorenporträt
Mary Henrietta Kingsley wurde 1862 in London geboren und starb 1900 in Südafrika an Typhus. Mary Kingsleys Vater hat als Arzt und medizinischer Betreuer reicher Aristokraten weite Reisen unternommen. Sie selbst jedoch war bis zum Tod ihrer Eltern nie irgendwohin gereist, sondern blieb zu Hause und versorgte ihre kranke Mutter. Einzig in Büchern ging sie auf Reisen, las sehr viel über Afrika und wusste eine Menge über den Kontinent, ohne je dort gewesen zu sein. Dann, als Mary Kingsley dreißig Jahre alt war, starben beide Eltern. 18 Monate später stach sie Richtung Afrika in See.
