Trenton is a small shoreline community on the banks of the Detroit River. Once populated with hardwood forests and the home of the Potawatomi Indians, Trenton later became known for its shipbuilding companies. Founded by Abram Truax in 1816 and platted in 1834, the towns name was originally Truaxton, was later changed to Truago, and since 1847 has been known as Trentona type of limestone mined from a local quarry. At one time, the city was touted as a center of diversified business and manufacturing in the Midwest.

The Trenton Historical Society, established in 1986, maintains archives in the Trenton High School and the Trenton Veterans Memorial Library. Using the resources of the Trenton Historical Society and the Trenton Historical Commission, files from the Trenton Police and Fire Departments, and a myriad of other sources, this pictorial history by Linda Mierzejewski and Carol Hendricks tells the story of Trenton from its founding in 1816 through the 21st century.
