A former creative writing instructor, Marlis Manley Broadhead has award-winning short stories and poems in literary magazines-including Kansas Quarterly, Crosscurrents, and Kansas Women Writers, and founded the annual Mendocino Coast Writer's Conference. The winner of the 1957 National Championship for Jalopies was her step-father, Frank (Frankie) Lies, and for this story she has drawn from family scrapbooks and website racing archives, as well as memories of her early life around race tracks.
