Another not-so-well kept secret is the incredible fishing that takes place in remote locations across the state. Trustworthy Liars is a fishing memoir, but more than that it is about the relationships that develop over a quarter-century of adventures as three lifelong friends get together each summer for 10-12 days of non-stop unguided fishing and exploring the lakes and rivers of southwest Alaska near Bristol Bay. This is not necessarily a guidebook to successful fishing. In fact, many of the stories illustrate the pitfalls of headstrong individuals who rely on their own devices for adventure and success. As the title implies, the stories are often humorous accounts of what happens when one-up-man-ship becomes the not-so-hidden agenda. The often overlooked and sometimes mundane details of survival are illustrated in a number of stories including the perils of flying in a small plane and avoiding bears who fish the same waters. But in the end, it is a collection of stories of men who are true friends.

Larry Meath is a third generation Alaskan who has spent most of his adult life telling tall tales to the students he teaches. When not in front of a classroom, he spends much of his time skijoring with his dog Logan in the winter and fishing in the summer--sometimes successfully.
