Tulips and the Pale Horse is a story of love, lust, poverty, abuse, death, and triumph in nineteenth century Netherlands. When Janna Rop's young husband died leaving her destitute, her only choice was to live on a communal farm performing abhorrent tasks and sleeping on a straw bed in a drafty barn among lewd farmhands. Subsequently, she gave birth to four illegitimate children, including the author's direct ancestor, Jacob Rop, the first of his line to immigrate to America. To this fundamentally true story he has taken the liberty of adding fictional people, places and events to give vitality to Janna's life.
