Experimental evidence suggests that the oxygenation of solid tumors may influence growth, malignant potential and sensitivity towards non-surgical treatment modalities (e.g. standard irradiation, certain anticancer drugs).
The first part of this volume deals with methodological aspects, oxygenation in experimental tumor systems and the modification of oxygenation using various chemical and physical modalities.
The following chapters are devoted to the subject of oxygenation of human tumors. Here, studies are described in which the oxygenation of various human tumors entities have been characterized, as well as studies in which a manipulation of tumor oxygenation has been attempted , with the aim of improving therapy outcome.
The final chapter presents a summary of two round table discussions in which methodological aspects and the clinical relevance of tumor oxygenation were discussed.
