Irene Deitsch was born in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in art education. After graduation, she married Marshall Deitsch and moved to Los Angeles where she taught art at the junior high school level. She retired from teaching to raise her two sons. When the family moved to Palo Alto, California, she accepted a position in the art library at Stanford University where she gained many of her literary skills. After a brief period of working on her own as a caterer, she studied gemology and jewelry design, later opening a jewelry store, Vanguard Gems, which she managed for many years. Now that her sons are married and her two grandchildren are "up and out," she has time to pursue her interests in worldwide traveling and antique collecting. Her passion for collecting antique tussie-mussies began in the late 1990s when she fi rst saw an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Since that time she has managed to put together a sizeable collection, many of which are depicted in this book. She also collects antique scent bottles; and her husband, Marshall, collects paperweights.
