Mary DuBose McAliley is married to the Rev. J. R. McAliley III. They have five children and five grandchildren. They enjoy an active Christian life in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2015, Mary received a twenty-five-year service award from Emory University. Most of Mary's years at Emory were spent as Director of Multimedia Communications. Mary began at Emory as a consultant to the Emory Employee Assistant Program. She was then hired as a Senior Publications Specialist for Information Technology and then as Associate Director of Creative Services for Emory University. As Director of Multimedia Communications, Mary worked with political figures such as Senator Sam Nunn. She was honored when President Jimmy Carter appointed her to serve on his Communication Council for the Atlanta Project. The White House surprised her when they called her private office phone one Friday and asked her to meet President Clinton to prepare an internet press release for the President's re-election. Mary was honored to work on President Clinton's Economic Summit, to webcast the 1996 Olympics, to produce electronic elements of each year's graduation, to create simultaneous classes with schools in other countries, and other innovative and challenging opportunities. Mary created multimedia communications and campaigns with great poets and authors like Salman Rushdie, Christopher Hitchens, Alice Walker, Billy Collins, Natasha Trethewey, Li-Young Lee, and Seamus Heaney, and many other incredible people. It was exciting for Mary to be a planning team member for the $24M building project for the Center for Library and Information Resources. As well, it was exciting for her to help develop two cable plants and programming for other residential and academic venues for Emory University. Mary was honored to be appointed by the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs of Emory University to the University Strategic Planning Committee's Societies in Conflict and Transition Group. Mary recently retired from Emory University. She spends much of her time writing, creating, and involved in church and family activities. Mary received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia, is trained in facilitation and strategic planning by the Institute of Cultural Affairs, as well as other areas of personal interest. But...none of this prepared Mary for what she discovered in 1998 in the Holy Land. Not one wonderful personality can compete with the delightful friendship of Father Elias Chacour from Ibillin and nothing could prepare her for a personal encounter with the Holy Spirit.
