Speiser est célèbre pour son grand voyage aux Nouvelles-Hébrides entre 1910 et 1912, et la somme, un grand classique de l'ethnographie de l'Océanie, qu'il nous a laissée : Ethnologie du Vanuatu publiée à Berlin en 1923. De ce voyage, il a ramené 1826 artefacts et quelques 1600 photographies pour le musée de Bâle.
