This book is an attempt to devise ways to improve the management of fishery resources through community participation in data collection, monitoring control and surveillance in small scale fisheries of Tanzania. The concepts and principles of co-management are contained in and its legal binding description was also described. It also describes how Beach Management Units were established, used as data enumerators developed their own by-laws, fisheries resources management plans and on their development managed to form Collaborative Fisheries Management Areas in some districts. The book will also explain their move to Networking so that they can be represented on the higher level meetings of fisheries management within and outside the country. The document will also elaborate briefly the scope and purpose of co-management in general and its analysis in Tanzania through beach management units (BMU's). Lastly, it emphasize sustainability of BMU's to perform their responsibilities and duties to manage the fishery resources in their respective areas.

Fatma Sobo completed her Master of Phillosopy in Fisheries Management and Marine Biology, University of Bergen Norway, 1999. Then, attended various short courses including Fisheries Policy and Planning at the United Natios Universty, Fisheries Training Program in Iceland 2004. Currnetly,working as Assisstat Director of Fisheries, Tanzania.
