Although the epidemic is now over, the health systems, economies and peoples of the countries affected are still reeling from its impact. The virus is transmitted to people from bats and spreads in the human population through human-human transmission. The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50% although fatality rates have varied from 25-90% in previous outbreaks.
