The Park was established in 1996. The Park is mostly within Lubusz Voivodeship, although it also extends northwards along the east bank of the Odra into West Pomeranian Voivodeship (My libórz County, Gmina Boleszkowice). It borders the Uj cie Warty National Park, which was established in 2001 (formerly being part of the Landscape Park). The name Uj cie Warty means "mouth of the Warta", the Polish word uj cie also being used for the termination of a river even when it flows into another river or lake rather than the sea.
