Autorenporträt
Looking at this screen for the last hour, I've managed to write a total of these nineteen words. Seems impossible to convey my past and present without sounding completely "up myself." Saved by a phone call from our oldest, who is soon to be a senior, studying a field of engineering I can barely pronounce, much less describe, she summed up my life in one word - passionate. Apparently, I am a very passionate person. From my early years flying jets, chasing contrails in the Air Force, to the next ten years learning how much I loved India despite its proclivities for driving a person to despair. Fortunes and passions changed again after my "Indian Wars," when I met and married an Aussie, who changed my life bringing a pair of new words into my vocabulary, sport horses. Raising our two kids in the foothills of the Blackall Mountains, a misnomer if ever there was one, we had a near idyllic Australian life. Then the unthinkable, the kids became un-kids and now older, wiser and more adventurous they wanted more. So, our lives turned again as we moved to the States opening new doors for everyone from sport horse competitions for my wife to science and engineering scholarships for both of our wunderkinds (German for wonder kids). The house was suddenly very quiet; the proverbial "empty nest" was now my fate. Left alone for hours with my wife's calico cat, who has as much regard for me as I do her, I escaped into writing. A massive, elaborate novel of my years in India emerged. It is visually beautiful a dramatic story replete with the magic and austerity of life on the Malabar Coast. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed and realized I could not do the story justice - my skills were not ready for such a multifaceted story. Thus ensued the "Tale of Two Horses." I imagined the story as a series of books told entirely from the perspective of the horses, giving the reader an insight into not just the interaction between riders and horses but also with each other. Horses have a highly evolved method of communicating with each other that some might interpret as telepathic. The truth is they have a body language numbering in the hundreds if not thousands from modest signals to overtly violent expressions for the other horse. Trying to capture these nuances amidst two real-world story lines - helped me find Noodles voice.
