Friedrich Baron de la Motte Fouqué, 12.2.1777 Brandenburg/Havel - 23.1.1843 Berlin. Der von einer normannischen Hugenottenfamilie abstammende F. wurde nach Privaterziehung Offizier, nahm 1802 seinen Abschied, heiratete 1803 in zweiter Ehe Caroline von Rochow, geb. von Briest, und lebte die nächsten 30 Jahre auf dem Briestschen Gut Nennhausen bei Rathonow und in Berlin. Nach Carolines Tod (1831) und erneuter Heirat zog F. nach Halle (1833-41), dann nach Berlin. Er beteiligte sich an literarischen Gemeinschaftsarbeiten und Gesellschaften, gab Werke jüngerer Autoren heraus (A. von Chamisso, J. von Eichendorff) und übte bedeutenden Einfluss auf das literarische Leben durch Zeitschriften und Almanache aus. Sein eigenes umfangreiches Werk (Dramen, Romane, Erzählungen, Versepen, Gedichte) ist stark von seinem Interesse an skandinavischer Literatur und Mythologie und der Ritterwelt des Mittelalters geprägt, das durch die Verbindung mit moderner Psychologie eine besondere Note erhält. Der

Roman 'Der Zauberring' ist ein Vorläufer der Mythenromane des 20. Jh.s. Sein bekanntestes Werk, die Novelle 'Undine', variiert das für F. wichtige Thema der Frau als Verführerin und Zerstörerin. Für die Opernversion E. T. A. Hoffmanns (UA 1816) schrieb F. selbst das Libretto.
