L'oeuvre de Marcelle Tinayre est affaire de circonstances. En analysant le mode de construction des personnages de quatre romans tinayriens publiés dans les années 1895-1905 à la lumière du contexte socio-culturel de l'époque, ce livre permet de mieux comprendre l'ambiguïté générique inhérente à l'oeuvre romanesque tinayrienne. L'étude de personnages est ici mise à profit pour dévoiler d'une part les difficultés d'écriture éprouvées par Tinayre, et d'autre part les stratégies employées par celle-ci pour surmonter ces contraintes.
