The Union Pacific Railroad operated well-maintained passenger trains including "City of San Francisco," "City of Los Angeles," "City of Portland," and "City of Denver" until May 1, 1971, when AMTRAK took over United States intercity passenger service.

Beth Anne Keates, an industrious, dedicated, and passionate volunteer for the West Chester Railroad Heritage Association, with the encouragement of her father, has had a lifelong interest in rail transportation. Her husband, Brian, and sons, Andrew and Jacob, also share that interest. Kenneth C. Springirth, 1962 graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology and author of a series of books on streetcar and railroad lines, has an interest in rail history as his father was a streetcar motorman in Philadelphia, and his grandfather was a streetcar motorman in Washington, D.C.
