The Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) interventions were started in Indian State of Assam in the year 2003. A need is felt to know about the status of functioning of such EGS centres in the State of Assam. The present study is carried out with a focus to assess the functioning of these of EGS centres and also to know the learning achievement level of the children studying in such centres. This study may be useful to educational planners and researchers. The findings may be helpful in framing the policies for universalization of primary education.

Prof. Sarkar is the Dean, School of Management Sciences,Tezpur University (A Central University of India) while Dr. Baruah is Associate Professor in the same University. They have carried out research and consultancy in the area of primary education and rural development. Most of the recommendations of their research studies have been implemented.
