This study explores the issue of unlawful command influence in the USAF from the squadron commander's perspective. First, this paper examines the history of the law which governs our military personnel and defines unlawful command influence. A review of select case history further clarifies today's legal definition. Additionally, this paper considers relevant training and learning opportunities that shape our officers understanding of the law. Next, interviews provide the squadron commander's perspective. The three elements (i.e. legal definition, training and experience, and commanders' evaluation) are then pulled together in a discussion germane to unlawful command influence. Finally, this paper offers recommendations for mitigating unlawful command influence; doing so will serve to ensure commanders the freedom of action to carry out their lawful duty of maintaining morale, welfare and discipline of the personnel under their command.
