Jim Satterfield has been a competitive age-group runner since the 1950s. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and a Teaching Certificate from Washington State University and is also a certified USATF Level I Coach. He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he still races competitively.
