Lewis apporte son savoir-faire à cette discipline. Il a obtenu un diplôme en droit à l'Université de Toronto, ville dans laquelle il a par la suite exercé la profession d'avocat pendant quelques années. En 1986, il s'est orienté vers la gestion de technologies pour des cabinets d'avocats, un domaine qui en était encore à ses débuts à l'époque. Il a travaillé avec de nombreux organismes à but lucratif et non lucratif, acquérant ainsi une vaste expérience dans la fonction de soutien aux entreprises. Il a travaillé pendant 17 ans pour le gouvernement du Canada, se spécialisant en même temps et cela pendant plusieurs années dans le développement de politiques administratives, principalement pour la fonction de soutien de la gestion de l'information. Il a écrit plusieurs livres et des dizaines d'articles pour des revues et des journaux, et donne fréquemment des conférences à travers les États-Unis et le Canada.
