The earth itself is deeply worried. Much of what is written about the destruction of natural resources is genuine. The most persistent concerns are about rising poverty levels, vulnerability, conflicts, bio piracy, sustainability and waning of indigenous knowledge systems and promotion of modern science. Governments and development partners have an urgent task to address these concerns and avoid adverse consequences for the environment. In long term this will be sustainable. However, in short term these concerns will persist for several more decades if not seriously checked. The issues raised in this book attempt to highlight how all people are to blame - Northerners and Southerners and not always the former; and what needs to be done through collective action and participation. The highlights cover the interconnected questions of international and national policy, natural resources utilization, unstable economies, development, traditional knowledge, land grabs and encroachments, markets, gender and sustainability. The author attempts to pull some punches taking to task governments and development partners: the desire and passion of many to build better and sustainable communities.
