Booker Taliaferro Washington (18 April 1856 - 14 November 1915) was an American educator, author, and adviser to multiple presidents of the United States. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of former slaves and their descendants. He wrote several books throughout his life, including The Negro in the South, a collaboration with W. E. B. Du Bois.
