Roger Slagle wrote the manuscript UP RIVER, while he worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Village Based Counseling Program of Norton Sound Health Corporation located in Northwestern Alaska. In the 1990's he was part of a team of professionals who established the first Village Based mental health programs in 15 Inupiat, Yupik and Siberian Yupik villages located in Northwestern Alaska. While in Alaska he Mushed and Bred a dog team of Alaskan village dogs as he became more involved in the Iditerod sled dog race during the 1990's. Roger lived in a small cabin off grid in an area called Banner Creek fifteen miles East of Nome also known as Mushers Alley. At that time, Roger trained and dreamed of one day entering the Iditerod Sled Dog race across Alaska. During an Early Spring, his plans were quelled when a grizzly bear attacked his dog lot, killing and injuring the majority of his team including Miko, his lead dog. During his ten years in Bush Alaska Roger wrote the Manuscript UP RIVER which he illustrated, indexed and established the Glossary of Alaskan definitions with Siberian Yupik and Inupiaq linguistic translations. In 1998 Roger applied to the Professionals Program in Screenwriting at the University of California Los Angeles. While at the UCLA School of Film and Television Roger studied with Dr. Lew Hunter, an Icon of screenwriting who later became his personal mentor. Up River was later written into a screenplay which won the Denali award as best Alaskan screenplay of 2012. Roger is fluent in Spanish and he is conversational in Hindi. He reads and writes both languages. Roger holds a BA degree in Art, a Masters degree in Studio Art (MFA), and a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW). Roger is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with certification at the California Board of Behavioral Sciences #LCSW10885. Roger is an award winning film director, producer and screenwriter with nine films to his IMDb credits. He considers the film Ruger the Rude Dog, (comedy 2021), to be his best film. Ruger the Rude Dog has been reviewed as a cross between Mel Brooks and the dog movie Beethoven. Roger is currently in Private Practice in Northern California where he works as a Mental Health therapist with a specialization in Anxiety and PTSD treatment.
