Leather, although an organic material is not considered to be sustainable as the processing of it causes harm to the environment,particularly in countries such as India. Here, the flourishing Indian leather industry generates high levels of waste that frequently ends in landfill. Fashion design plays an important role in shaping market demand and addressing levels of waste through improved design and generating awareness within consumers. However, few designers have tackled this topic of 'waste' Indian leather. Therefore this practice-based study has investigated how waste leather can be 'upcycled' to create a new fashion accessories brand.
