She was transferred to the School of Oceanography at Texas A&M University for ocean research work, and eventually returned to the Navy, being struck in 1992. Gyre was built in Moss Point, Mississippi, by Todd Seattle Halter Marine, and was laid down on 9 October 1972 and launched on 23 May 1973.
