After six months as an evacuee in wartime Ilfracombe, John has made many friends and grown to love the town. He is proud to be one of Ilfracombe's Vackies, as the evacuees are known locally. His thirst for adventure has led him into trouble, but now his mother is wondering if he and his sister wouldn't be safer at home in Blitz-stricken London.
