The Vaigai Express is a superfast day express train running between Chennai and Madurai. It is one of the prestigious trains of the Southern Railway zone of the Indian railways. Started on August 15, 1977, the Vaigai Express runs between Chennai Egmore Railway Station and Madurai Junction Railway Station. Both stations are located in Tamil Nadu. The train is named after the Vaigai River. It is the only train in the Southern Railway which has completely fluorescent lighting interiors and sun control sliding glass shutters installed for the first time ever in India in all its 8 second class coaches.
