She was elected as the first mayor of West Hollywood, California when it was incorporated in 1984. She was also the first lesbian mayor of an incorporated municipality in the United States. Her most well-known action as mayor was taking down a controversial anti-LGBT sign posted in front of Barney''s Beanery after the city council passed an anti-discrimination ordinance. Under her, the council also passed strong rent control and anti-eviction laws, and also began offering domestic partnership benefits, becoming the first American city to legally recognize same-sex relationships.
