Natural plant extracts contain a variety of phenolic compounds to which various biological activities are attributed. The present work deals with the study of phytochemistry and antioxidant activities of the plant Abelmoschus esculentus . The quantitative estimation of total polyphenols (by Folin-Ciocalteu method), total flavonoids (by aluminum trichloride method) and condensed tannins (by iron trichloride method) showed that ethanolic extracts of Abelmoschus esculentus fruits are rich in these compounds. Moreover, the antioxidant power of the extracts of Abelmoschus esculentus was evaluated, by the DPPH and ABTS test, showed a considerable antioxidant activity for the ethanolic extract as well as for the aqueous extract. From this study it is concluded that there is a strong correlation between the total polyphenol content and the antioxidant activity. Thus, this coordination confirms that the antioxidant activity of okra is mainly due to their phenolic composition.
