Upper limb, especially the cubital fossa, is a common site for obtaining venous blood for analysis, transfusion, and intravenous therapy. This is done by using superficial veins, which are prominent and accessible. These veins include cephalic vein (CV), basilic vein (BV), median cubital vein (MCBV), and median antebrachial vein (MABV). The bad news about these superficial veins is that they are anatomically variable despite venipuncture using superficial veins for obtaining a blood sample is one of the most common procedures in the emergency room. In order to implement safe way of venipuncture and save the precious life of patients, understanding the pattern of superficial veins anatomy in the upper limb is mandatory task for every health professional.
